Run Lola Run (with The Bays)

January 15th 2009 15:05
Thanks to this year's Sydney Festival, there are many exciting events running for us film afficianados, one of these offfering being iiNet Films Alfoat at Darling Harbour. I went to check out Run Lola Run, which was being shown with live music of UK electronic rock band The Bays, performed below the screen. It really doesn't get any better than this. You get an open air screening of an international successful action packed film and a live concert of amazing music simultaneously at the beauty of Darling Harbour with absolutely no money out of your pocket.

It was great to watch Run Lola Run again. Like the recent Slumdog Millionaire, it's an edgy, thrillingly filmed film with a simple premise tied with the idea of fate determining one's destiny. The band performed their improvisational music pretty closely to the original soundtrack, keeping its edgy electronica sound while adding some subtle hip hop funk for a slightly more chilled out, musical experience as well as a cinematic one. They were never off the beat and they went comfortably with all the chaotic action going on onscreen. Neither medium overshadowed the other, which made for a one of a kind experience, despite the rain and the uncomfortable seating arrangements.

For those who are unfamilar with the film, Run Lola Run (or Lola Rennt) is a German film written and directed by Tom Tykwer. Lola (Franka Potente) receives a call from her panic-stricken boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), who has just screwed up a diamond smuggling deal by losing the money on the train, which he was supposed to give to his short tempered crime boss Ronnie. He tells her he has 20 minutes to somehow make up the lost money or else he is to be killed. Determined to save her lover's life, Lola starts running for their lives to find the money in time.

It's exhausting watching Lola run around Berlin so frantically through the majority of the film, but the music as well as the amazing quick cuts and unusual but quirky transitions keep you glued to the screen. The vibrant colours - including Lola's fiery dyed red hair and in the Vertigo-esque stariway animation sequences add to the great energy of this outlandish but indulgently engrossing story. The film is highly imaginative with its storytelling, making every mundane detail like Lola bumping into a foul mouthed woman on the street into something thought provoking and funny at the same time. The film toys with the idea of fate, of how so much can change in one person's life when a seemingly insignificant aspect of their day is either added, altered or taken away. Despite these interesting philosophical questions, the film aims mainly to be an entertaining thrill ride comparative to a drug induced high, with what I could only assume was groundbreaking film techniques and storytelling for its time when it was first released.

Run Lola Run with The Bays was a great experience, but is no longer playing at Darling Harbour. The rest of the films to be shown as part of Films Afloat At Darling Harbour are Enter The Dragon with Karsh Kale and Midival Punditz is playing 16-17 January and Fantastic Planet with Ben Walsh and The Orkestra Of The Underground 18 January starting 8.30pm. Get there early because it gets pretty packed and bring something comfy to sit on!

Run Lola Run 7/10
With The Bays 9/10
